Liminal Spaces

Liminal Space Therapy Explained by Mind in Motion

At Mind in Motion, we have come to recognize the profound importance of liminal spaces in the therapeutic process. Liminality, the state of being “betwixt and between,” offers a unique opportunity for transformation and growth that we actively cultivate in our psychotherapy practice. So what is liminal space therapy, and why might it matter for your journey?

Understanding Liminality in Therapy

Liminal spaces are transitional periods characterized by ambiguity and disorientation. In psychotherapy, these spaces often emerge as clients move from old patterns of thinking and behaving toward new, healthier ways of being. At MIM, we view these liminal periods not as obstacles to be rushed through but as fertile ground for deep psychological work.

The MIM Approach to Liminal Space Therapy

  1. Creating Safe Containers: We recognize that liminality can be unsettling. Our therapists work to create a safe, containing environment where clients feel supported as they navigate uncertain terrain.
  2. Embracing Uncertainty: Rather than rushing to provide answers or solutions, we encourage clients to sit with the discomfort of not knowing. This tolerance for ambiguity often leads to more authentic and lasting change.
  3. Metaphor and Symbolism: Liminal spaces are rich with symbolic potential. We use metaphor and imagery to help clients make meaning of their experiences and connect with deeper parts of themselves.
  4. Ritual and Transition: Drawing inspiration from anthropological studies of liminality, we sometimes incorporate small rituals or symbolic acts to mark important transitions in therapy.
  5. Intersubjectivity in the Liminal: We pay close attention to the intersubjective field between therapist and client, recognizing that liminal spaces can shift the therapeutic relationship in profound ways.

Liminality in Different Modalities

Individual Therapy: In one-on-one sessions, we help clients identify and explore their personal liminal spaces, whether related to life transitions, identity shifts, or emerging insights.

Group Therapy: Our process groups often function as collective liminal spaces where members can experiment with new ways of relating and being. The group itself becomes a transitional space between individual therapy and everyday life.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP): The altered state induced by ketamine creates a powerful liminal space. When skillfully navigated, this pharmacologically induced liminality can accelerate the therapeutic process.

 Case Example

Melida, a client struggling with long-standing depression, entered a liminal phase as she began to question her core beliefs about herself and the world. Rather than rushing to replace these beliefs with new ones, her MIM therapist encouraged her to fully experience this “in-between” state. Through dream work, artistic expression, and mindfulness practices, Melida was able to tolerate the uncertainty and eventually emerge with a more flexible and compassionate sense of self.

At Mind in Motion, we believe that embracing liminality is key to deep and lasting therapeutic change. By creating intentional spaces for clients to inhabit the “in-between,” we open up new possibilities for healing and growth.

As therapists, we too must be comfortable with uncertainty, serving as steady guides through the mysteries of the psyche."

This integration of liminality into our practice reflects our commitment to holistic, depth-oriented psychotherapy that honors the complexity of the human experience. In the liminal spaces, we find not just challenges but profound opportunities for transformation.
