Frequently Asked Questions
Who Can Practice Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy can be provided by licensed mental health professionals who have completed specialized graduate-level education, clinical training, and state licensure. Our clinical team includes therapists with credentials such as:
LMSW, LCSW
LMHC, LMHC-D, MHC-LP
Ph.D. and Ph.D. candidates
MA, M.A., EdM
ATR-BC, LCAT
CLC
Our practice operates under the clinical oversight of our co-founders, who hold doctoral-level psychology licenses (PsyD and PhD). The team participates in regular supervision and consultation to support clinical quality, ethical practice, and ongoing professional development.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, psychotherapist, counselor, and psychiatrist?
Psychologists are mental health professionals with a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD). They’re trained in assessment (like ADHD evaluation), diagnosis, and evidence-based therapy. Some also conduct psychological testing.
Psychotherapists is a broader term that includes anyone licensed to provide talk therapy, this can be psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, or clinical nurse specialists. The focus is on helping people understand themselves, work through emotional challenges, and improve their relationships and well-being.
Counselors (often LMHC, LPC, or similar licenses) provide talk therapy as well, typically with a focus on practical tools, coping strategies, and emotional support. Their training is at the master’s level.
For simplicity’s sake, psychologists, psychotherapists, and counselors are often grouped under the umbrella term “therapists.”
Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD or DO) who specialize in mental health. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and in some cases also offer therapy, though many focus primarily on medication management.
How many sessions are there in psychotherapy?
There’s no fixed number of sessions, therapy is highly individual and depends on your goals, the pace you feel comfortable with, and the complexity of what you’re working through.
Some people come for a few months to address a specific concern. Others choose to stay longer-term because therapy becomes a meaningful space for growth, insight, and ongoing support.
Together with your therapist, you’ll regularly discuss how therapy is going, what’s shifting, and when you might feel ready to end or pause. It’s a collaborative, client-led decision rather than a preset timeline.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on factors such as therapist credentials, their personal preference, insurance coverage if accepted, location, etc. We work with several insurance plans and offer out-of-network options when applicable. Our team provides free insurance verification so you can understand your benefits and expected costs before starting therapy.
We offer a range of fees starting at $75/h. Affordable therapy options are available through our Therapists in Training and sliding-scale program.
How do psychotherapists work?
Psychotherapists work by creating a structured, confidential space where clients can explore emotions, thoughts, relationships, and patterns that may be contributing to distress or feeling stuck. Therapy is collaborative and unfolds over time, shaped by the client’s goals, history, and pace rather than a one-size-fits-all formula.
Different therapists may emphasize different approaches, but all psychotherapy involves listening, reflection, and helping clients develop greater awareness, flexibility, and understanding of themselves
How psychotherapy helps?
Psychotherapy can help people better understand themselves, navigate emotional difficulties, improve relationships, and respond differently to long-standing patterns. Rather than offering quick fixes, therapy supports deeper reflection and lasting change by helping clients make sense of their experiences and develop new ways of relating to themselves and others.
People seek therapy for many reasons, including stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, identity questions, or a desire for personal growth.
Can therapists practice across state lines?
In the United States, psychotherapists must be licensed in the state where the client is physically located at the time of the session. This applies to both in-person and virtual therapy. Because licensing laws vary by state, therapists cannot legally provide psychotherapy across state lines unless they are licensed in that specific state or practicing under a legally permitted arrangement.
Can I see a therapist from any state?
You can work with our therapists if you are physically located in a state where they are licensed to practice. Currently, Mind in Motion Psychological Services is licensed to provide psychotherapy services in New York and New Jersey.
Do I need a referral to see a psychotherapist?
No, most people do not need a referral.
You can contact us directly, schedule an appointment, and begin therapy without seeing another provider first.
The only exception may be specific insurance plans that require a referral or authorization. If you’re unsure, our Care Coordinator can check your benefits and guide you through the process.
Can psychotherapist prescribe medication?
No. Psychotherapists—including psychologists, social workers, counselors, and LMFTs, cannot prescribe medication.
Medication can only be prescribed by psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, or other licensed medical providers (depending on state regulations). Many clients benefit from a combination of therapy and medication, and psychotherapists often collaborate closely with prescribing clinicians to support coordinated care.
How do I know which therapeutic approach will help me?
You won’t know that, and you shouldn’t choose the approach, choose the person. Our therapists collectively practice more than 20 approaches and modalities, with core ones including Contemporary Psychodynamic, Relational and Interpersonal therapies, Psychoanalysis, CBT, DBT, Trauma-Informed Care, and Solution-Focused Therapy. For most people on the receiving end of therapy, trying to navigate all these options is overwhelming and unnecessary.
What matters most in therapy is the relationship you build with your therapist. Research consistently shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship, not the specific modality, is the strongest predictor of meaningful change.
