Online vs In-person Therapy
In our recent survey, 70 New Yorkers were asked about their preference in session format. Virtual sessions took the lead, with 34% of respondents favoring telehealth. This isn’t surprising given the convenience and accessibility that virtual therapy offers, especially for those with busy schedules or mobility challenges. It’s clear that for many, the comfort of connecting from home outweighs a face-to-face interaction and commuting time.
However, in-person sessions are far from obsolete. A significant 29% prefer sessions in therapist’s office. Hybrid models, which blend in-person and virtual experiences, also garnered substantial interest – 31%. These numbers suggest that flexibility is key: people want options that adapt to their changing needs and circumstances.
If, in this season of life, you’re choosing online therapy, here are a few things to consider:
- Privacy. Worrying about a roommate or a family member eavesdropping on your session can make it difficult to speak openly. While occasionally taking a session from a car or quiet outdoor space is possible, having a consistent, private location is ideal.
- Stable internet connection and a backup plan with your therapist in an event of heavy interruptions.
- In and out-of-session rituals. Setting aside time before and after your session helps you arrive mentally, reflect on insights, and transition back into daily life.
Discussing your session arrangements with your therapist can add surprising depth to the therapy process.

The cost of online therapy is typically the same as in-person therapy. As a group practice, we are in network with major insurance plans in New York and also work with out-of-network benefits when applicable.
Fees vary depending on the therapist’s licensure level and experience. We also offer sliding scale options in certain cases.

Explain your copay or deductible
Clarify out-of-network reimbursement
Help you choose a therapist within your budget
Before you begin online therapy, we make sure you understand your financial options clearly.
Will insurance cover online therapy?
Yes, Mind in Motion accepts most major New York insurance plans, making online therapy affordable and accessible to New Yorkers.
Do you offer hybrid sessions?
Yes. Some of our therapists offer hybrid therapy sessions, combining in-person and online appointments. If you’re located within the proximity of our offices in Long Island City, Queens and Albany, and your therapist provides hybrids appointments, you may choose to alternate between meeting in person and continuing therapy online, depending on your schedule, travel, or seasonal needs.
Hybrid therapy can be especially helpful for clients who travel frequently, attend school, or prefer the flexibility of telehealth therapy while maintaining occasional in-office connection.
Is online therapy better than in-person?
Online therapy is not inherently better or worse than in-person therapy – it depends on your needs, personality, and circumstances. Research shows that telehealth therapy can be just as effective for many concerns, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, and trauma.
Online therapy for New Yorkes is often ideal if:
- Commuting isn’t an option
- You have a busy schedule
You live outside major cities
- You often travel
You prefer meeting from the comfort of home
You feel more at ease in your own environment
Can online therapist prescribe medication?
Therapists (psychologists, LMHCs, LCSWs, MFTs) do not prescribe medication – whether sessions are online or in person.
If you’re looking for both online therapy and medication, Mind in Motion has an in-house Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who provides medication management and collaborates with your therapist to ensure coordinated care.
How to do online therapy with roommate/partner/family member?
Privacy is one of the most common concerns in online therapy. Here’re some practical options:
Using headphones to prevent others from hearing your therapist
Running white noise outside your door
Scheduling sessions when roommates most likely will be out/busy
In-person therapy may be preferable if you have limited privacy at home, safety concerns, or if the idea of someone overhearing you creates stress and/or tension in your household.
It can be helpful to discuss privacy concerns with your therapist to find solutions that may serve as a temporary compromise while still feeling manageable and safe.
