Why is it hard to find a therapist?
Finding the right therapist can be challenging because therapy is a deeply personal and relational process. The most important baseline is that therapist is either fully licensed or practicing under supervision. Beyond credentials, factors such as personality, communication style, cultural understanding, life experience, and your sense of personal comfort all play a critical role.
If you’re considering starting therapy, we suggest that instead of trying to become an expert in credentials or trying to understand a plethora of therapeutic approaches, you focus on meeting therapists as people. Notice whom you feel comfortable speaking with, who you naturally gravitate toward, and with whom you feel hopeful about your situation.
Our Care Coordinator and our specially designed Therapist Matching Quiz can help speed up the process by filtering therapists based on availability, specialization, insurance coverage, and other practical considerations. Ultimately, however, the real fit is something you experience in the first sessions. All of our therapists also offer a brief introductory “chemistry check” call to help you make an informed and confident decision.
Is it normal to be in therapy for 2 years?
Yes, this is very common. Based on our client pool, the average length of therapy is approximately 1.9 years. Therapy is highly individual, and the length of treatment depends on a person’s goals, life circumstances, and the depth of work they wish to do.
Our approach is largely psychodynamic and person-centered, which focuses on understanding emotional patterns, relationships, and internal conflicts over time. These methods tend to support longer-term therapeutic work, especially for clients seeking more than short-term symptom relief and wanting meaningful, lasting change.
Can I switch therapists?
Yes, finding the right therapeutic relationship is important, and sometimes it takes time to determine whether the fit truly feels right. You’re welcome to schedule free “chemistry check” calls with as many therapists as you’d like.
Even after starting therapy, if you wish to explore working with a different therapist within our practice, we support smooth transitions and continuity of care. Simply email our Care Coordinator, and she will arrange either a “chemistry check” call or an initial full session with the therapist of your choice.
Do therapists accept insurance?
As a group practice, we are in network with major insurance providers and can also work with out-of-network benefits when applicable. Coverage varies depending on your specific plan, and therapists have different fee ranges.
Our Care Coordinator can verify your insurance benefits and clearly explain your options before you begin.
Are your therapists licensed?
Short answer, yes. Some of our therapists hold independent licenses, while others practice under a group license of Mind in Motion. Our practice provides ongoing supervision and consultation to support ethical standards, clinical quality, and professional accountability of our therapist, under the clinical leadership of our co-founders, Dr. Jihee Cho, Ph.D., and Dr. Damien Tilliman, Psy.D.
This model allows us to offer clients more accessible psychotherapy, including sliding scale options and broad list of in-network insurance providers
Our group practice holds licenses to operate in New York and New Jersey.
Do you offer therapy in languages other than English?
Yes. Members of our team offer psychotherapy in Korean and Mandarin in addition to English. Receiving therapy in a language that feels natural and emotionally precise can be an important part of the therapeutic process. You can review each therapist’s profile to see the languages they offer.
How do I get matched with a therapist?
You can review our therapist profiles directly, take a Therapist Matching Quiz, or reach out to our Care Coordinator. We offer brief introductory calls to help you determine whether a particular clinician feels like a good fit. We can help you explore options based on your goals, preferences, and practical considerations such as availability or insurance.
Do you have an LGBTQ+ therapist?
Yes. Some members of our clinical team identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. In addition, all of our therapists have training and experience working with LGBTQ+ clients and approach this work with care, respect, and attention to each person’s individual experience.
If having a therapist who shares lived experience is important to you, you are welcome to let us know when reaching out, and we will help guide you accordingly.
